Macmillan & CAB In Partnership

The Macmillan and CAB Partnership is a partnership between Macmillan Cancer Support and Lanarkshire Citizens Advice Bureaux and has been providing benefit, housing, employment, debt and consumer advice for people affected by cancer in Lanarkshire since 2003. The service is managed by Airdrie CAB and is based in Airdrie. The service was originally fully funded by Macmillan Cancer Support, with in-kind support from CAB and was the first service of its kind in the UK. Its aim was to meet the unmet need for financial advice among those affected by cancer which was identified in Lanarkshire. Research, carried out by Macmillan Cancer Support, established that financial worries was second only to pain for those affected by cancer. The service has built strong links with health professionals in Lanarkshire who are able to refer their patients to the service.

These relationships have been key to the services success. The advisers have all received cancer awareness training and have gained experience in dealing with people affected by the numerous different types of cancers and they take a holistic approach to advice giving. To date the service has had 4724 new clients referred. It has achieved over £7millon in confirmed client financial gains. Those helped, patients and carers both are encouraged to feedback their experience of the service. This feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. From April 2009 the services funding will come from Macmillan Cancer Support, NHS Lanarkshire, North and South Lanarkshire Councils. In-kind support will continue to be provided by CAB. It is hoped that the service will be expanded using staff from these partner organisation and The Pension Service so that in the future it will be a reality that in Lanarkshire everyone newly diagnosed with cancer will be offered and have access to financial advice. For further information please contact The Macmillan & CAB in Partnership Lanarkshire on 01236 757332.
