Citizens Advice Lanarkshire

Free, confidential, independent, impartial advice

How are the Lanarkshire Citizens Advice Bureaux funded?

Each Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is an individual charity in its own right and must raise its own funding. Getting adequate funding is a perennial problem for most charitable organizations, and bureaux are no exception.

For every pound a CAB gets, it can return up to seven to local economies, often by helping people claim entitlements they didn't know they were eligible for. Last year, the CAB Service secured a total of over £5m for clients in Scotland.

Volunteers are the mainstay of our organisation. They contribute over 130,000 hours each year to bureaux in Lanarkshire, and if paid at the minimum wage, would cost the Service over £500,000 per annum.

In Lanarkshire bureaux receive core funding from the local Council. Unfortunately this has not been able to keep up with inflation or development thus we must look to other sources to resource the shortfall or to fund any development.

Specialist services such as Money Advice and Welfare Rights may receive some support from the Local Authority but are mostly supported from other sources such as the Community Fund, Social Inclusion Partnership and Trusts. The Local Authority funds the North Lanarkshire Citizens Advice Bureaux Independent Housing Advice Service. New initiatives such as the Macmillan & Cab Partnership that provides advice to people affected by cancer, is funded by Macmillan Cancer Relief for a three-year period. Thereafter it is hoped that the statutory bodies will contribute to the continuation of this service. The Scottish Executive funds the In-Court Advice Service.

Bureaux operate in an uncertain environment; a great deal of staff time is spent seeking funds to supplement the core funding and to get additional resources to enable us to respond to the needs and demands of the local communities we serve.

How you can help your local bureau
